Alternator Repairs

THE IMPORTANCE OF AN ALTERNATOR

An alternator is a generator of electric power in you car and is a major component of your vehicle’s charging system. Whenever your engine is running, the alternator charges your battery and supplies additional electric power for the vehicle’s electrical systems. An alternator is attached to the engine and is driven by a drive belt. Typically, an alternator is a maintenance-free unit. On average, an alternator can last for 8-12 years without any repairs. However, if an alternator fails, the car may still run on battery power alone, but only for a short time. It will die as soon as the battery charge is depleted.

Does something seem off? Do your windows struggle to open? Has your stereo died recently? It could be the alternator.

Our
Services

An issue with an alternator usually results in the battery charge light coming on while driving. If your vehicle is having trouble turning over and the battery is in good condition, this could indicate a problem with the starter motor.

If your alternator is having trouble providing energy to your car, it will most likely be replaced rather than repaired.

When an alternator is replaced, the technician will first inspect and test the alternator output, charging system, and drive belts. They will disconnect the battery, then remove and replace the alternator. Finally, they will reconnect the battery and test the output again to ensure everything is now running smoothly.

Battery or Alternator?

Thanks to their close relationship, it can be tricky to tell whether your electrical troubles are coming from your car alternator or battery. While lots of signs point to a faulty alternator, a dead battery is very easy to spot.

A dead battery means that your car won’t start at all. If, on the other hand, you’re able to start the car without a jump, but notice power loss as the drive progresses or struggle with a stalling engine, your car is suffering from a failing alternator.
